Anstey shines before weather has its say

DETERIORATING weather and high winds forced a premature end to Saturday's Metzeler Ulster Grand Prix at Dundrod.

In the action that did take place, Kiwi Bruce Anstey notched a double in the Lidl Supersport race one and the McKinstry Skip Hire Ulster Grand Prix Superbike race, before crashing out of the second Supersport 600 race in a four-rider spill at the bottom of the Deers Leap, resulting in the rest of the day's racing being abandoned.

On a day which was also plagued by red flag incidents and delays, clerk of the course Noel Johnson had no other option than to call it a day with poor light and visibility also factors.

In the McKinstry Skip Hire Ulster Grand Prix Superbike race, Anstey produced another of his brilliant rides, when he took victory from the grip of early race leader Guy Martin on the final lap approaching the hairpin.

Fermanagh's Lee Johnson took a slick third place finish just in front of Ballymoney's Michael Dunlop.

That summed up a poor day for the Dunlop brothers, with neither getting onto the podium.

In the Lidl Supersport race, it did look like William Dunlop was going to take a fantastic win but for his Tyco Suzuki to expire in a puff of smoke on the last lap at Wheelers corner, handing the victory to Anstey, who also set the fastest lap of the race at 126.088mph.

The Around-a-Pound Superstock Race produced the closest finish in the history of the Ulster Grand Prix when Manxman Dan Kneen took the win by a mere 1/1000 of a second from Bradford's Dean Harrison and Anstey.

This was a cracking race from the word go with Kneen, Harrison and Anstey all taking turns at the front, but it was a daring drive from Kneen at the exit of the final corner that sealed the Manxman's first international road race win.

Kneen, however, ended the day in the Royal Victoria Hospital when he, along with Harrison and Keith Amor, crashed out in the Supersport race, with all three treated for fractures.

James Cowton took a convincing win in the Lisburn Council lightweight race, while Daly Matheson took his first ever Dundrod win in the ultra leightweight race, while Ivan Lintin took the Metzeler Supertwins race when he beat Derek McGee and James Cowton.

Meanwhile, the French rider who was injuried in a crash during Thursday's racing at Dundrod remains in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Pierre Favre was taking part in his first Ulster Grand Prix event when he crashed at high speed at the Rock Cross section of the circuit, resulting in the race being immediately stopped.

Favre is believed to have suffered multiple back injuries.

Former World Moto Grand Prix rider Danny Webb, who also crashed during Thursday's races, is making a steady recovery after he sustained fractures when he crashed at Joey's Windmill.
