NEW Zealander Jake Robertson has called for lapped runners in important races to be forced to drop out. Robertson fell after becoming entangled with fellow Kiwi Nick Willis as they were overtaking a back-marker in the 5000m at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

He got up again but never made up the deficit and finished ninth as his twin brother Zane picked up the bronze medal. "I really don't believe that these people should be competing. They do not have the same standards as us and they're really interfering," said Robertson.

One of those who would have been affected by a rule change in Glasgow was Northern Ireland competitor Paul Pollock, who was lapped by the leaders as they approached the final bend in the 10,000m.

The Annadale Strider moved out and ushered the eventual medallists past him before completing his final lapand-a-half to take a 19th place finish. Pollock, who wore trainers and not track spikes, drew criticism for apparently using the race simply as training for the marathon at the European Championships in Zurich next week.

Pollock recorded 29:11.46, almost 40 seconds slower than his only previous effort at the distance earlier this year.
