Ulster U21 HC first round Tyrone 2-8 Armagh 1-17 Armagh had too much class for Tyrone in yesterday's Ulster U21 Hurling Championship first round clash at Healy Park.

A strong second half performance from the Orchard saw them cross the line four points clear to set up next Wednesday's last four clash with Down.

Caolan Gorman fired home a 14th minute goal to ease the Orchard into a five-point lead, but the Red Hands responded with a1-2 salvo in the space of four minutes.

It was Brendan McShane who rifled a shot through a cluster of bodies and into the net, but the visitors responded with three points, two of them excellent efforts from Glen McKeown. They led by 1-6 to 1-4 at the interval, but Tyrone drew level eight minutes into the second half with a Ciaran McCrudden goal.

However, Armagh took control, and out-scored their opponents by eight points to two in the remainder of the contest.

Fullerton brought his tally to seven, while Dylan McKenna scored three times and defender Conor McAnallen hit a couple of long range scores. Tyrone: C McElhatton, M McCrory, R Devlin,

Amy Foster was 14 hundredths of a second outside her NI 100m record when she 11.54 in the B race at the Diamond League meeting in Glasgow. The City of Lisburn sprinter was smooth out of the blocks and was well in contention at the halfway point but slipped back to eighth in the final third of the race.

* ANNADALE Strider James O'Hare set a new personal best in Manchester when he recorded 3:43.16 at the BMC Grand Prix.

* AILEEN Reid had her second consecutive top 10 finish in the WTU World Triathlon Series event in Hamburg. The Irish number one finished 48 seconds behind winner Gwen Jorgensen of the USA, who won in 56 minutes and 54 seconds.

Reid was with the leaders coming out of the water at the end of the swim stage and maintained contact during the cycling but could not match the American on the final 5K run. The Derry native was eighth in the previous round in London.

Cricket

England captain Alastair Cook admits his side would be taking a step into the unknown if they played Simon Kerrigan against India at Lord's next week, but the hosts could be ready to take that gamble after drawing the first Test.

The series opener at Trent Bridge petered out to a farcical end as, with neither side able to press for victory, Cook decided to bowl himself and rest his frontline attack.

Improbably, he managed to snare the wicket of Ishant Sharma with his rag-tag collection of mimicry and loopy tweakers but a more serious spin option is in the frame for Thursday's second Test.
