Irvine takes silver medal in Colombia

IRELANS'S Martyn Irvine won silver in the scratch Race at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships, Colombia.

Defending world champion Irvine, from newtownards, came second in the 15km race behind Russia's Ivan Kovalev and Hong Kong's

King lok Cheung. Irvine's success comes after a frustrating 12 months that began with world glory, but was riddled with serious injuries including a fractured leg.

Irvine will now focus on the points race in Cali, success in which would secure him his fourth world medal. Meanwhile, fellow Irishman Ryan Mullen narrowly missed out on a podium place in the Individual Pursuit, losing by 0.1 of a second to new Zealand's Marc Ryan in the bronze medal ride-off.
