Travers to the fore in Silent Valley race

tHeRe can be fewer race venues more scenic than the Silent Valley, which was the backdrop for last weekend's second Dambusters 10 Mile/10K race. the event was organised by Born2Run events and sponsored by Podium 4 Sport and Kilkeel Credit Union.

Conditions could not have been better, with the sun shining to ensure that participants enjoyed great views of the Mournes and beyond.

Don Travers (right) led from the start of the 10-mile race the Newry man ploughed on relentlessly over hill and dale to win in one hour and 27 seconds.

Karen Alexander of Sperrin Harriers finished seventh overall to lift the ladies' prize in a time of 1:05:19. North Belfast Harrier Mark McKinstry excelled in the 10K to cross the line first in 37:48. Former teenage star Joanne Mills led the women home in 41:27. Born2Run is an events company set up to organise running events in areas of outstanding natural beauty. the next race in the Born2Run series is the Surf'n'turf Half Marathon and 10K in Curracloe, County Wexford on October 5.
