Nou horizons can only help Villa

ATLETICO Madrid may have done the best bit of transfer business for the season ahead after capturing Barcelona outcast David Villa (right) for around £4m.

Following a leg break in November 2011, Spain's record goalscorer never truly got going at Camp Nou.

But even if he'd been injury-free during his couple of seasons, there was no guarantee Villa would have been a big success.

For Camp Nou has been a graveyard for centre-forwards since Pep Guardiola took over in 2008 and created a system that revolved around Lionel Messi.

Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alexis Sanchez and Villa have all invariably failed in the Barcelona attack because they couldn't come to terms with the Messi system. Often Henry, Villa and Sanchez were played out of position - usually on the flanks - in order to allow Messi to use the central pathway to goal.

Villa was clearly always ill-at-ease with his secondary role at Barcelona.

At the Vicente Calderón Stadium, he will be Atletico's main man and don't be surprised if he hits 20-plus goals there this season.
