Mark Webber (right) has revealed he never had any intention of remaining in Formula One beyond this season - on a day when he gave team boss Christian Horner the cold shoulder.

Webber has confirmed he is to quit the sport at the end of the year, signing a multi-year contract with Porsche as they launch an assault on the World Endurance Championship and Le Mans. The 36-year-old claims to have remained in touch with Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz over the past six to eight months regarding his plans.

As for Horner, however, he was not informed until just before 9am yesterday - much to his disappointment, and he suggests that of the team.

As far as Webber is concerned, he adopted the appropriate protocol as he said: "It was a Porsche announcement. "I informed Christian before the announcement, which contractually I should do, so that's what we did. "Obviously I will talk to the factory at some stage. They've been superb for me on the floor. But Porsche were very keen to make the announcement. It was about Porsche and Mark Webber today. "All of the right channels and avenues we went through to get the message across as subtly as we could in terms of the announcement was done in the right way."

Andrei Arshavin has rejoined former club Zenit St Petersburg after his contract with Arsenal expired.

The 32-year-old had been on loan at Zenit for a spell last season after seeing his chances limited at Arsenal, where he had been the club's then recording signing in a £15m deadline day deal in February 2009.

Arshavin, who has agreed a two-year deal, said on the Zenit website: "I am very glad that it happened. I am glad to get back to the city. It's good to wear the Zenit shirt. I just want to play football."
