Mayweather to face Alvarez

FLOYD Mayweather junior says he's "giving fans what they want" after the WBC's 36-yearold world welterweight champion confirmed he will fight Mexican sensation Saul Alvarez, the WBC and WBA's light-middleweight champion, on September 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Mayweather (above) used the social network Twitter in the early hours of yesterday to make his announcement. He tweeted: "I chose my opponent for September 14th and it's Canelo Alvarez".

He extended his unbeaten record to 44-0 with a classy unanimous decision over Robert Guerrero to retain his title on May 4 while the formidable Mexican red head, whose nickname 'Canelo' translates as cinnamon', is 22, and was also in successful defence mode recently.

Alvarez's management made it known they wanted to fight Mayweather next and, while WBC president Jose Suliaman suggested Alvarez defend next against Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto and hold off on Mayweather to 2014, Alvarez has got his wish.

They have agreed terms to come down a fraction from light-middle to make the fight at a catchweight 152lbs.
