THE Etape Mourne Cycling Sportif takes place this weekend and hundreds of cyclists are expected to challenge themselves on the inclines of the Mourne mountains in Co Down.

Riders can choose netween two routes. Route one covers 65.5 kilometres with 1,190 metres of climbing and route two covers 79.5 kilometres with 1,364 metres of climbing.

The race takes place on Sunday August 11 and starts at 9.30am in Annalong before ascending into the mountains. There will be medical and mechanical support as well as feeding stations along the way.

All riders will receive a medal after crossing the finisihing line and the Etape Mourne Cycling Sportif will donate a percentage of each entry to the chairperson’s chosen charities. There will also be the opportunity to socialise afterwards with food and drinks provided.

Officially launching the Etape Mourne event for 2019, Chairman of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council chair Charlie Casey said the Mournes were the perfect location for the race.
