1926: The first British Grand Prix was staged at Brooklands. Known as the RAC Grand Prix, the race was won by Senechal and Wagner, driving their Delage at an average speed of 71.61 miles per hour.

1999: Newcastle striker Alan Shearer was sent off for the first time in his career as Aston Villa won 1-0 at St James' Park. Referee Uriah Rennie dismissed Shearer for a 71st-minute challenge on Ian Taylor.

2004: Irish distance runner Cathal Lombard tested positive for banned drug EPO.

2004: In the All-Ireland quarter-finals Fermanagh beat Armagh 0-12 to 0-11 and Mayo beat Tyrone 0-16 to 1-09.

2005: England won the second Test against Australia by two runs to square the Ashes series at 1-1. They went on to win the series.

2011: Manchester United beat Manchester City 3-2 after trailing 2-0 at half-time to win the Community Shield at Wembley.
