Hurling & Camogie

All-Ireland SHC semi-final - how the Clare players rated

Donal Tuohy: Saw a couple of puck-outs intercepted as Galway ran riot early on, although outfield targets didn’t help with lack of movement. Made a superb save to deny Conor Cooney a second half goal and quick off his line on two other occasions. 7

Patrick O’Connor: Recovered reasonably well after a nervy start. Moved off Glynn on to Conor Cooney and was one of those who contributed to the calamity of errors that resulted in a first half goal for the St Thomas’s man. 6

David McInerney: A costly slip allowed Whelan in for a second half point. Shown a yellow for throwing his hurl as Glynn eyed up the posts in extra-time. 6.5

Jack Browne: Started nervously as Whelan looked bright early on. One of several men tried on Conor Cooney at different stages of the game, and did okay. 6

Seadna Morey: Struggled on Conor Cooney and was switched to namesake Joseph, and the pair just about broke even. Hit a couple of bad wides in extra-time. 6

Conor Cleary: Handed the task of marking Joe Canning and, although the Portumna star wasn’t at his best, he still proved far too cute for Cleary. 6

Jamie Shanahan: Worked tirelessly but found the going tough when detailed to look after the powerful, hard-running Galway sub Niall Burke. 6

Colm Galvin: See Star Man

Cathal Malone: David Burke was just starting to get the better of him when he was replaced 12 minutes after the break. 6

Peter Duggan: Excellent throughout. Always chose the correct option out on the wing, was unerring from frees and scored a truly magnificent second half point. 8.5

Tony Kelly: Barely involved in the opening 15 minutes but hugely influential for the rest of the half after dropping back to midfield. Sent over two monster scores as Clare battled back from an awful start. 7.5

David Reidy: Took the fight to Galway even when things weren’t going Clare’s way before being replaced late on. 7

Podge Collins: Starved of decent ball but got no change from Adrian Tuohy. 5.5

John Conlon: His battle with Daithi Burke was the big talking point pre-match, and they probably broke even. Nothing came his way in the first but sprung to life after the break when drifted deep and to the wings, landing four from play. 7.5

Shane O’Donnell: Always a threat with his pace, and fired over one of the scores of the day when he was brought back into the action in extra-time. 7.5

Substitutes

David Fitzgerald: Gave David Burke plenty when introduced, landing a lovely point within minutes and driving forward at every opportunity. 7

Ian Galvin: Scored two points after coming on for Reidy. 6.5

Aron Shanagher: Marked his return from a cruciate ligament injury by scoring the goal that put Clare ahead for the first time in the game during extra-time. 7

Jason McCarthy: The man on the end of a flowing move to score the final point of a dramatic game two minutes into added time in extra-time. 7

STAR MAN

Colm Galvin

GALWAY threatened to run away with the game until Galvin dropped back to provide a screen in front of the defence. Peter Duggan was also a strong contender for Star Man, but Galvin helped solve Clare’s puck-out woes, used the ball supremely well – bar a misplaced pass straight to Niall Burke – and also made a vital late interception that led to the Duggan’s equalising free in the dying seconds. 8.5
