AN Irish boxer, reported to be Michael O’Reilly, has been suspended after testing positive for a banned recreational drug on the eve of the Olympics.
The boxer in question failed a drugs test before he flew out to Rio de Janiero.
He has been informed that his A sample tested positive and can now request to have his B sample tested. However, he cannot take part in any competition until an investigation is completed.
The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) acted quickly to provisionally suspend the boxer in question.
O’Reilly posted on his Twitter account: “Box on the 12th in the last 16 against the winner of Mexico or Iraq.”
In a statement the IABA said it had been told of “an alleged violation of the Irish Anti-doping Rules” and that an athlete had been “provisionally suspended”.
“The Irish Athletic Boxing Association has always maintained a zero tolerance approach to doping and Irish Boxing has been one of the most widely tested sports by the National Anti-Doping Programme over the last number of years,” it said.
