1903: Maurice Garin, nicknamed 'the little chimneysweep', won the inaugural Tour de France.
1957: Alec Russell became only the second man, after Gordon Richards in 1933, to ride all six winners in one race meeting.
1997: Crystal Palace agreed a fee of £2.1million for Juventus winger Attilio Lombardo, who went on to manage the Eagles for a brief spell.
2002: The Football Association deducted Football League newcomers Boston four points and fined them £100,000 for contractual irregularities. The Pilgrims still managed to stay up at the end of the season, finishing in 15th.
2004: Chelsea agreed a £24million fee with Marseille for striker Didier Drogba.
2005: Newcastle signed Turkey international Emre Belozoglu from Inter Milan for £3.8million.
2006: David O'Leary left Aston Villa by mutual consent after three years in charge.
2007: Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello were confirmed as Honda's drivers for the 2008 Formula One season.
2009: American Stewart Cink won golf's Open Championship after defeating 59-year-old countryman Tom Watson in a four-hole play-off.
2010: Liverpool signed England international Joe Cole on a four-year contract.
2011: Keri-Anne Payne became the first Great Britain athlete to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics after winning the 10 kilometre open water race at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai.
2012: Tottenham and England defender Ledley King retired from professional football.
2015: Liverpool reached an agreement with Aston Villa over the payment terms for the £32.5million transfer of Christian Benteke.
2017: Jodie Taylor became the first female England player to score a hat-trick at a major tournament as the Lionesses started their European Championship campaign with a 6-0 thrashing of Scotland.
2018: Liverpool announced the signing of Brazil international Alisson on a six-year contract after agreeing a world-record fee for a goalkeeper from Roma.
2018: Lewis Hamilton agreed a two-year contract extension with Mercedes through to the end of the 2020 Formula One season.
