1969: Pele scored his 1,000th goal with a penalty for Santos against Vasco da Gama. The Vasco goalkeeper responded by taking off his jersey to reveal a shirt underneath with a message congratulating Pele on his achievement.
1997: Gerry Francis resigned as Tottenham manager, with chairman Alan Sugar announcing Grasshopper Zurich coach Christian Gross would be taking over at White Hart Lane.
2003: Scotland were thrashed 6-0 by Holland in Amsterdam, the Dutch qualifying for Euro 2004 6-1 on aggregate after the two-legged play-off.
2007: Wigan chairman Dave Whelan announced Steve Bruce as the club's new manager as the Latics agreed to pay £3million in compensation to Birmingham.
2007: Former Great Britain rugby league captain Mike Gregory died aged 43 after a four-year battle with a neurological disease.
2008: John Terry nodded home a late winner as England beat Germany 2-1 in a friendly in Berlin.
2010: Indian poultry firm Venky's completed their buy-out of Blackburn. Within a month the new owners had sacked Sam Allardyce as manager and replaced him with Steve Kean.
2011: South Africa-born former England all-rounder Basil D'Oliveira died at the age of 80 after a long battle against Parkinson's disease. D'Oliveira, of Indian-Portuguese heritage, made headlines in 1968 when he was included in the England squad for the tour of South Africa, which had to be called off as the apartheid-era South African government refused to accept his presence.
2013: Per Mertesacker headed the only goal as England were beaten 1-0 by Germany in a friendly at Wembley.
2015: Batsman Ian Bell was dropped from England's Test squad to tour South Africa, with Gary Ballance and Nick Compton returning to vie for the number three position.
2017: England's Tommy Fleetwood won the European Tour's Race to Dubai.
