1890: Blackburn's William Townley became the first man to score a hat-trick in an FA Cup final as Rovers trounced Sheffield Wednesday 6-1.

1980: Three-time world champion Nelson Piquet won his first Formula One grand prix, in the United States at Long Beach.

1988: Lloyd Honeyghan became the first British boxer since Ted 'Kid' Lewis in 1917 to regain a world title, beating Jorge Vaca of Mexico with a knockout in the third round of their WBC welterweight bout at Wembley.

2000: The Football Association dished out record £150,000 fines to Leeds and Tottenham for misconduct in their Premier League clash in February.

2001: Sprinter John Skeete was banned for two years by UK Athletics after failing a drug test, even though the governing body accepted he was "morally innocent". Skeete's dietary supplement had been tampered with.

2008: Derby were relegated from the Premier League with a record low total of 11 points following just one win, eight draws and 29 defeats in the 2007-08 season.
