ON THIS DAY 

1863: The first steeplechase under National Hunt rules took place at Market Harborough in Leicestershire.

1927: Ferdinando Minoia and Giuseppe Morandi, driving an OM, won the inaugural Mille Miglia. The race, from Brescia to Rome and back, was the most famous long-distance race of its time.

1959: Mushtaq Mohammad, aged 15 years and 124 days, made his Test cricket debut for Pakistan against the West Indies at Lahore. He was the youngest person to play Test cricket, a record that stood until 1996.

2002: Kenneth Wolstenholme's death was announced. The 81-year-old was fondly remembered for his "They think it's all over - it is now" line of commentary in the 1966 World Cup final.

2007: Then Leeds Rhinos coach Tony Smith was appointed in charge of Great Britain rugby league.

2008: David Beckham won his 100th England cap in a 1-0 international friendly defeat to France in Paris.

2009: Former world number one Kim Clijsters announced she would come out of retirement and return to playing on the WTA Tour.

2016: Kell Brook retained his IBF welterweight title by beating Kevin Bizier inside two rounds at the Sheffield Arena.

2017: Holland sacked coach Danny Blind a day after losing 2-0 to Bulgaria in their World Cup qualifier in Sofia.

Martin Donnelly (motor sport) - Former F1 driver for Arrows and Lotus, born 1964.

Nacho Novo (soccer) - Former Rangers and Dundee striker, born 1979.

Mikel Arteta (soccer) - Former Arsenal, Everton and Rangers midfielder, now a coach with Manchester City, born 1982.

Prosper Utseya (cricket) - Zimbabwe spinner, born 1985.

Rob Kearney (rugby union) - central to Ireland's Grand Slam triumph in the 2018 Six Nations rugby championship, he currently plays for UCD, Leinster and Ireland. As a teenager he also played rugby union for Clongowes Wood College and gaelic football for Louth in the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship, born 1986.

Steven Fletcher (soccer) - Sheffield Wednesday and Scotland striker, born 1987.

Von Miller (American football) - Denver Broncos linebacker and Super Bowl 50 winner, born 1989.
