1811: The first recorded golf tournament for women took place in Musselburgh, Scotland. The local golf club put up a prize of a creel (fishing basket) to be contested by the fishwives of the area.

1942: Joe Louis successfully defended his world heavyweight title for the 20th time when he knocked out Buddy Baer, brother of Max, four seconds from the end of the first round. In their previous encounter, a year earlier, Baer had become the first man to be disqualified in a world heavyweight title fight.

2001: Sven-Goran Eriksson resigned as Lazio manager earlier than expected to assume his coaching role with England, a month ahead of a friendly against Spain. The Swede had signed a five-year contract three months earlier to take over in the summer.

2003: Two-time US Open champion Pat Rafter announced his retirement from professional tennis.

2004: Southampton manager Gordon Strachan announced he would not extend his contract with the club beyond the end of the season. Strachan later returned to management with Celtic in the summer of 2005.

2008: Newcastle parted company with manager Sam Allardyce after just eight months in charge.

2009: Andrew Strauss was appointed England captain for the tour of the West Indies following Kevin Pietersen's departure from the post.

2011: Ryan Giggs' second-minute penalty condemned Kenny Dalglish to a losing start as Liverpool manager as Manchester United recorded an FA Cup win over the Merseysiders, who also had Steven Gerrard sent off.

2012: Lionel Messi won the FIFA Ballon d'Or award for the third year in a row.

2013: Kevin Pietersen signed a full central contract with the ECB, ending a spell of uncertainty over his future after a falling-out with the England dressing room.

2014: Pepe Mel was appointed head coach of West Brom on an 18-month contract, but he lasted a little over four months and left by mutual consent a day after the 2013-14 season finished.

2017: Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo was named best men's player at the inaugural Best FIFA Football Awards.

Ray Houghton (soccer) - the current analyst and commentator with RTÉ Sport was a former star for Liverpool and the Republic of Ireland. He scored some memorable goals including a winning header against England in the 1988 European Championships and also in a shock win against Italy in the 1994 World Cup at the Giants Stadium in New York, gaining revenge for defeat by the Italians in the 1990 World Cup, born 1962
