1976: Derby became the first British club to score 12 goals in a European match when they beat Ireland's Finn Harps 12-0 in a UEFA Cup tie.
1984: Lester Piggott broke Frank Buckle's record of 27 Classic wins when he rode Commanche Run to victory in the St Leger.
1985: Tony Jacklin's European team inflicted defeat on the Americans in the Ryder Cup for the first time in 28 years at The Belfry.
2003: England Test batsman and wicketkeeper Alec Stewart retired from first-class cricket.
2005: Frank Hadden was confirmed as Scotland's new coach by the Scottish Rugby Football Union after a spell as caretaker.
2011: Lancashire won the LV= County Championship Division One title after they beat Somerset by eight wickets, while Warwickshire drew with Hampshire.
2012: Hampshire won the Clydesdale Bank 40 final by losing fewer wickets than Warwickshire after the scores finished tied on 244.
2015: Manchester United defender Luke Shaw suffered a double fracture of the right leg in a 2-1 Champions League defeat at PSV Eindhoven.
2015: England selected the uncapped duo of Alex Hales and Zafar Ansari for the test tour against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates. Surrey all-rounder Ansari suffered an open dislocation of the left thumb hours after being called up.
