1895: The first 'real' motor race ended. The first car to cross the line in the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris race was a Panhard-Levassor, driven by Emile Levassor at an average speed of 15mph.
1897: One of the greatest long-distance runners of all time, Paavo Nurmi, was born. The Finn won a record 12 medals, including nine golds, in the three Olympic Games between 1920 and 1928.
1915: Donald Budge, the first man to achieve a Grand Slam in tennis, was born. His second successive Wimbledon title in 1938 formed part of his Grand Slam - the Australian, French, Wimbledon and US titles.
1982: Italian driver Riccardo Paletti died in a tragic accident on the start grid at the Canadian Grand Prix. Driving for the Osella team, the 23-year-old Formula One rookie's car went into the rear of the stalled Ferrari of Didier Pironi, and Paletti was left with fatal injuries.
2001: Referees became professional for the first time in English football and came under the control of the Professional Game Match Official Board.
2004: England lost 2-1 to France at Euro 2004, having led 1-0 going into injury time.
2005: England beat Australia by 100 runs at the Rose Bowl in the first Twenty20 international between the two countries.
2008: Midfielder Aaron Ramsey completed his move from Cardiff to Arsenal on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.
2010: Ireland's Jamie Heaslip was handed a five-week ban for striking with the knee during a 66-28 defeat to New Zealand in New Plymouth.
2011: Former England manager Steve McClaren was appointed the new manager of Nottingham Forest on a three-year contract. He resigned four months later.
2011: Andy Murray won the AEGON Championships, beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 3-6 7-6 (7/2) 6-4 in the final at Queen's Club.
2013: Australia batsman David Warner was suspended from all cricket up to the first Ashes Test that summer and fined almost £7,000 after accepting a charge of unbecoming behaviour for his bar-room attack on England's Joe Root.
2014: Holland thrashed holders Spain 5-1 in their World Cup opener.
2014: Joe Root finished 200 not out - his maiden Test double-century at Lord's - as England posted 575 for nine declared on the second afternoon of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Larry Tompkins (gaelic games) - the double All-Ireland winner with Cork, 1989 and 1990, was born in Naas, county Kildare. He also played football with both the Kildare and Cork senior inter-county teams throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Tompkins captained Cork to the All-Ireland title in 1990 and later served as manager of the team from 1996 until 2003, born 1963.

Florent Malouda (soccer) - Former Chelsea and France winger, now with Metz, born 1980.
Darius Vassell (soccer) - Former England and Aston Villa striker, born 1980.
Kenenisa Bekele (athletics) - World record holder over 5,000 and 10,000 metres who won gold in both events at the 2008 Olympics, born 1982.
Chris Cusiter (rugby union) - Sale and Scotland scrum-half, born 1982.
Keisuke Honda (soccer) - Japan's AC Milan midfielder, born 1986.
Ryan Mason (soccer) - Hull and England midfielder, born 1991.
