1970: Bobby Charlton scored his 49th and last goal for England, against Colombia in Bogota, in a warm-up game for the World Cup in Mexico. His record was broken by Wayne Rooney in 2015.



1984: Down secured an Ulster semi-final with Tyrone following a 3-6 to 0-8 win over Fermanagh in Newry



1990: Seven points from Manus Boyle gave Donegal a 0-13 to 0-9 win over cavan in Ulster, Ray Carolan kicking all but two of the Breffni countys scores.



1992: Barcelona made it third time lucky as they won the European Cup, with Ronald Koeman scoring the only goal against Sampdoria at Wembley. In their previous two appearances in the final, the Catalan side had lost to Benfica in 1961 and Steaua Bucharest in 1986.



1996: After playing in more than 650 games and scoring 346 goals for Liverpool, striker Ian Rush left Anfield on a free transfer to join Leeds.



2001: Tyrone took a significant step towards the Ulster title as an Owen Mulligan goal helped them to a 1-14 to 1-9 win over rivals Armagh.



2002: Scotland suffered their fourth successive defeat under new boss Berti Vogts when they were beaten 2-0 by South Africa in Hong Kong, making the German the first ever Scotland manager to lose his opening four matches in charge of the national side.



2006: Brian Mallons early goal set Armagh on their way to a comfortable Ulster quarter-final replay win over Monaghan in Clones.



2008: Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton was jailed for six months at Liverpool Crown Court after admitting charges of assault and affray in relation to a confrontation outside a McDonald's restaurant in the city in December.



2009: The French courts ruled against Ferrari's bid to acquire an injunction against the FIA and its decision to introduce a budget cap into Formula One next season.



2007: Fermanagh came so close to forcing a replay against Tyrone before Gerard Calvan scored an equaliser for the Red Hands.



2012: Donegal began their 2012 campaign with a comfortable six-point win over Cavan at Kignspan Breffni Park. Colm McFadden scored their only goal from the penalty spot in the 1-16 to 1-10 win.



2013: Real Madrid president Florentino Perez announced coach Jose Mourinho would leave Real Madrid at the end of the season. The Portuguese rejoined former club Chelsea on June 3.
