1902: Twenty-five people died at Ibrox when part of a temporary wooden stand collapsed during a Scotland v England international.

1915: Jack Johnson, the first black world heavyweight champion, lost his title to Jess Willard when he was knocked out in the 26th round of their 45-round fight.

1922: Former England and Preston forward Sir Tom Finney, who was capped 76 times and knighted in 1998, was born. He died on February 14, 2014.

1930: England scored a then-record 849 against the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, thanks largely to 325 from Andy Sandham.

1947: Rangers beat Aberdeen 4-0 to win the first Scottish League Cup final.

2005: Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was suspended for two European matches after throwing water over a referee and his assistant following the second leg of Arsenal's Champions League encounter with Bayern Munich.

2006: Swansea duo Lee Trundle and Alan Tate were arrested by police and charged by the Football Association of Wales following the obscene anti-Cardiff logos they paraded at the Millennium Stadium. Trundle wore an insulting T-shirt while both players were shown carrying an anti-Cardiff flag following Swansea's win over Carlisle on April 2.

2012: Great Britain's Joanna Rowsell, Dani King and Laura Trott claimed gold in the three-kilometre team pursuit at the Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne. The trio clocked a world record time of three minutes 15.720 seconds in the final.
