Coherent policy within SF is not easy to identify

Patrick Murphy (October 12) casts a welcome and very critical eye on Sinn Fein's current position in Irish politics. It is not before time. He points to the pre-eminence of electoral popularity over principle in SF's present policies. He is quite right, even though the existence of a coherent policy or principle in the present Sinn Fein is not easy to identify. Certainly since 1969 whenever a clash loomed between principle and popularity in Provisional republicanism popularity invariably won through.
