Holidaymakers must take care on balconies

IT IS perhaps unsurprising to learn that Spanish police in a holiday area have handed out six fines so far this year to people caught jumping from balconies into swimming pools or climbing onto adjacent balconies.

There have been several deaths of Irish people this year after they fell from their holiday accommodation while abroad, so the potential for tragedy though not major is significant enough to give people pause for thought.

The latest person to be hit with a fine, reportedly fell 13 feet and had been in hospital receiving treatment for what was thought to be a broken knee cap. He is believed to have left the hospital and gone home to Ireland.

While we do not know the exact circumstances of all such incidents resulting in death it is clear that some of them were tragic accidents. If an accident can end in death then, holidaymakers should take every possible precaution and certainly not take unnecessary risks.
