New ministers under scrutiny

IRISH language groups have under-standably expressed concern after it emerged that the latest government reshuffle in Dublin has left them dealing with two ministers who prefer to keep their communications almost entirely in English.

Both Heather Humphreys, who heads the department of arts, heritage and the Gaeltacht, and her colleague Joe McHugh, who has specific responsibility for Gaeltacht affairs, have accepted that they are far from fluent in Irish.

It would be unfortunate if capable politicians could only be considered for promotion if they can demonstrate bilingual abilities but it is also difficult to see how the two ministers can build up proper working relations with key organisations in the present circumstances.

Ms Humphreys and Mr McHugh have each indicated that they intend to improve their grasp of Irish, and they will be aware that their progress is likely to be closely monitored.
