IRELAND soccer chief John Delaney has confirmed he gave the FAI a €100,000 loan.

The FAI chief executive said the money was to help the association through a short-term cash flow problem.

In a statement on behalf of Mr Delaney, the FAI said the "bridging loan" was given in April 2017.

It was repaid in full to Mr Delaney in June of that year.

The statement followed a report by the Sunday Times that said Mr Delaney gave a €100,000 cheque to his employer.

"I am aware of stories circulating around this loan dating back to 2017," Mr Delaney said.

"I confirm that I made a once-off bridging loan to the association to aid a very short-term cash flow issue. This is the only occasion on which I provided the association with a short-term loan."

The FAI also said that Mr Delaney "donated back to the FAI on a voluntary basis," his €160,000 earnings from Uefa as a member of the organisation's executive committee.

Mr Delaney is due to appear before the Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport next month.

Committee member and Social Democrats TD Catherine Murphy said the loan would form part of the committee's deliberations.

It will also look at the issue of governance at the FAI.
