Cavan ATM theft suspects 'from south Armagh'

TWO of the people arrested by gardaí in connection with an ATM robbery in Co Cavan are believed to be from Northern Ireland.

The men, who are understood to be related, were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning and are being held at Kells and Carrickmacross garda stations for questioning.

The pair are believed to be members of a well known family from Culloville in south Armagh.

They were arrested after an attempted ATM robbery in Virginia Co Cavan. It is understood the incident happened between 2am and 3am yesterday morning.

A third man was arrested yesterday afternoon and more than £500,000 in cash was also seized, as part of a wider investigation into a spate of ATM robberies in the border region.

The third man was detained at a hotel in Virginia and is being held at Bailieboro Garda Station.

The cash was discovered during the search of a property near Moynalty in Co Meath.

The three men are being detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be held for up to seven days.

There have been more than a dozen ATM robberies on both sides of the border this year.

On Apri 19, two ATMs were stolen in Kells, Co Meath.
