AN ORANGE Order wreath has been destroyed at a Co Derry war memorial.

Poppies were pulled off the wreath at Garvagh war memorial.

Ulster Unionist councillor Richard Holmes said police are treating the damage as a hate crime.

"It follows only a few weeks after a graffiti attack on a chapel in Kilrea," he said.

"It is disturbing that some people get a kick out of causing such offence to others.

"The attack on wreaths and war memorials has been an ongoing problem in recent years as we have seen at Teebane, Warrenpoint, Loughall and Narrow Water.

"The lack of understanding by a small section of our community that bullets on the battle fields of Europe did not distinguish between religions seems lost on some."

Anyone with information has been asked to phone police on 101.
