A teenager who died two weeks after a road crash in Co Down has been described as a "gem to this world".

Brooke Jackson (19), from Bangor, was left in a critical condition following a one-vehicle collision in the town in the early hours of June 16.

Ms Jackson's Fiat Grand Punto is understood to have struck a tree on Ballycrochan Road at around 3.30am.

Three teenage girls, who were passengers in the car, were also injured.

Brooke had been fighting for her life in hospital since the crash, but police yesterday confirmed the tragic news that she had died.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police can confirm that 19-year-old Brooke Jackson from Bangor has passed away as a result of injuries sustained.

"Brooke was the driver of the car involved in the collision.

"Her family have asked for privacy at this sad time."

Tributes have been paid to the young woman, who was a former pupil of Priory College in Holywood.

Friends have been writing on social media of their devastation, with many describing her as a "beautiful wee girl".

A relative said: "You never know the last conversation you’re ever going to have with a loved one, appreciate what you have always, such a beautiful angel and I'll never ever forget you.

"I love you always and forever."

One friend wrote: "I cannot believe I’m writing this but RIP Brooke you were such a beautiful angel.

"I love you so much, can’t believe my closest friend since we were kids running up and down Abbey Mount together grew her wings today."

Another friend said she was a "gem to this world".

"She was such a beautiful soul we'll all never ever forget, the joy she brought me will never ever be forgotten," he said.

Another tribute said: "A beautiful young lady who I remember through my time working at Priory College", while another said it was "heartbreaking news, such a waste of a young, beautiful life".

Among those also injured in the crash were pupils from Bangor Academy, which following the collision last month cancelled its sixth-year formal.

It is understood one of the teenage girls suffered life-changing injuries.
