A MAN has been taken to hospital with head injuries following an early morning assault in north Belfast.

The alarm was raised with police and Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) at 7.28am yesterday after the attack close to Artillery Flats in the New Lodge area.

An Ambulance Service spokesman said they were alerted via a 999 call.

"NIAS dispatched one Emergency Ambulance crew to the incident," he said.

"Following assessment and treatment at the scene, one male was transported to the Royal Victoria Hospital."

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "Police enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing."

The area was cordoned off as forensic officers examined the scene.
