THE death of Ryan McBride is the third tragedy to strike Derry City FC in just over a year.
In February last year, the club’s all-time greatest goal scorer, Mark Farren (33), died following a long battle with an aggressive brain tumour.
The Brandywell club also had a direct link with last year’s Buncrana Pier tragedy through one of its young stars, Josh Daniels.
The player’s mother Ruth, his sister Jodie-Lee, brother-in-law Sean McGrotty and young nephews Mark and Evan drowned when their car slid of algae into Lough Swilly a year ago yesterday.
Josh’s family have strong links with Derry City. His sister Louise James – Sean’s partner and Mark and Evan's mum – is a regular face at the club’s games.
In May last year, Josh received a standing ovation when he came on as substitute in a game against Finn Harps, and the 21-year-old said recently that the pain of his family loss motivates him every time he plays.
