STUDENTS working towards `stem' qualifications are being invited to apply for scholarships to help meet their costs.

SSE Airtricity has launched its 2019 scholarship with third level education funding available for young people living close to its wind farms in Tyrone, Derry, Fermanagh and Donegal.

The scholarship provides 50 per cent funding support towards the cost of third level fees for students commencing first year studies in mainly stem-associated subjects at partner colleges.

Courses with an association to stem subjects, including business, media and design, will also be supported.

In total, more than 150 students have received support worth more than £500,000.

Sarah Hoolahan, Sustainability Manager for SSE Airtricity, urged students to apply.

"By targeting the community funds associated with our wind farms in Tievenameenta, Slieve Divena II and Slieve Kirk we have, in partnership with the Ulster University, South West College and North West Regional College, made a long-term difference to the development of young people across the region," she said.

"Our commitment is to work in partnership with local communities where we operate our wind farms and the scholarship fund is one of the most effective ways in which we help young people develop into their careers."

:: Applications must be submitted by candidate students to their chosen institution no later than Thursday October 31.
