A ROW has broken out in Derry over a decision by Sinn Féin to oppose a proposal to grant an additional £10,000 to a youth football tournament.

One of Ireland’s foremost youth football tournaments, the Foyle Cup attracts teams to Derry from all over the world each July.

While the council grant aids the competition by more than £50,000, organisers asked for an additional £10,000 this year to facilitate 18 extra teams travelling from the USA.

At a meeting of the council’s health and community committee, the move was opposed by a number of members, including five Sinn Fein councillors.

SDLP councillor, Shauna Cusack yesterday criticised those who opposed the move and said the Foyle Cup brought thousands of people to the city every year.

“It gives back to our local businesses, those who are employing our families and friends and who, with our support, will offer opportunities to our youth in the future.

"It is an incredible marketing, showcasing, tourism opportunity for us.”

Her party colleague, Brian Tierney expressed disappointment that Sinn Féin did not support the proposal to provide extra funding.

However, Sinn Féin leader on the council, Sandra Duffy defended the party stance and said it the proposal had not been properly processed.

“We all recognise the hugely positive contribution made by the Foyle Cup and I would urge the organisers to submit funding bids through the correct process so that all organisations can be confident in the transparency and fairness with regards to the allocation of ratepayers’ funds,” Ms Duffy said.
