NORTHERN Ireland has again been ranked the most contented region in the UK, according to new statistics.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggests people in the north are happier and more satisfied with life.

Statistics reveal that people living here had the highest average life satisfaction, worthwhile and happiness ratings as well as the lowest anxiety ratings, when compared with the other regions.

This has been the same pattern since the ONS began life satisfaction surveys in 2011.

Among the findings are how people trust others. Figures show that around 73 per cent of people in Northern Ireland said that most people in their neighbourhood can be trusted, compared with just 56 per cent in London.

Another interesting statistic reveals that 80 per cent of people surveyed in the north said others in their local area were willing to help their neighbours - again the highest level in the UK.

The statistics, compiled between April 2016 and March this year, show an increase in the UK-wide average for happiness and life satisfaction, compared with the previous year.

Matthew Steel from ONS acknowledged the figures "may surprise some".

"Today’s figures may surprise some, showing a small increase in both reported happiness and life satisfaction during a period that has seen political change and uncertainty," he said.

"It's worth noting that employment rates rose during the period covered by this report, and other ONS analysis showed people perceiving an improvement in their own financial situations and in the overall economy.

"These are factors we believe may account for some people's increased sense of personal well-being."
