THIS is the moment when rescuer Davitt Walsh was reunited with the four-month-old baby girl he saved from the Buncrana pier tragedy.

Rioghnach-Ann McGrotty was rescued when Mr Walsh jumped into freezing water and took her to safety moments before her father's car sank on Sunday evening.

Mr Walsh (29), from Kerrykeel in Co Donegal, risked his own life to reach the sinking car.

Rioghnach-Ann's father Sean McGrotty (49), brothers Mark (12) and Evan (8), aunt Jodie-Lee Daniels (14) and grandmother Ruth Daniels (57) all died when their car slid on algae from Buncrana pier into Lough Swilly.

Louise James, the mother of Rioghnach-Ann, Mark and Evan, met Mr Walsh at the parochial house of Holy Family Parish in Derry on Tuesday.

The photo, which appeared in Thursday's Derry News, was taken at the parochial house.

Ms James told Mr Walsh, who was treated for shock and cuts to his feet following the rescue, she would be forever grateful to him for saving her daughter's life.

Following the accident Mr Walsh said he will never forget the screams of the people inside the car.

"The man said 'save the baby'," he said. "He stayed in the car with his family. He could have saved himself but he decided to stay with his family.

"I had a grip of another boy, I think he was about 12 years old but he was pulled away from me somehow. When I think about it now, I simply could not have held him up as well and managed to swim away."
