Sony pulled out some big names for their E3 video games showcase, but the dramatic presentation wasn’t without its flaws.
Though the next chapter in the Uncharted saga – minus Nathan Drake – was announced, The Last of Us Part II was nowhere to be seen, as was a lot of other gameplay.
The setting, however, was not one of the issues with the PlayStation showcase, with the Shrine theatre in Los Angeles serving as a stunning backdrop.
And the opening salvo of games, which included a good look at the gameplay of zombie game Days Gone, and a Horizon Zero Dawn expansion, were a great start to the show.
But despite the exciting nature of each of these games, two were already known of, while the other was an add-on to an existing title, rather than blockbuster new announcements.
Even when a surprise did come along, it was a remake of PS2 title Shadow Of The Colossus.
However it has to be said, it does look stunning.
Call Of Duty, meanwhile is heading back to the Second World War, and though the new trailer Sony showed gave a little more insight into some of the locations and different combat types players will engage in, plenty more about the game is still to be revealed.
One notable highlight was the narrative heavy new trailer for God Of War, which featured some amazing-looking gameplay – fight scenes in particular – as well as a some utterly terrifying creature encounters.
The closing moments of the trailer in particular are very striking when it comes to mythical creature stand-offs.
Another game to get an extended trailer – again, not unfamiliar to PlayStation fans – was Detroit: Become Human.
What we saw of the sandbox game, which shifts direction and tone as players make choices, bodes well for its release next year.
And following on from the its big unveiling last month, the villain of Destiny 2 – Dominus Ghaul – was given his moment in the spotlight for the first time.
Not only that, but Destiny 2′s launch was brought forward to September 6.
For the finale, fans were treated to an in-depth look at the new PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man game.
It looks hugely impressive, with a combat system full of sparks and combinations that leave you feeling like a superhero.
Not to mention the open world city landscape looks amazing, and there was a treat for big Spider-Man fans with a glimpse of Miles Morales – the man who takes over from Peter Parker as the web-slinger.
It was a strong ending to the show, and while plenty of what was shown will rightly draw big queues on the E3 show floor, many of the announcements aren’t due to land until 2018.
Patience is going to be something PlayStation fans get very good at for the next six months.
