IT'S summer - so at least the rain is a little warmer - which means it is the time of year when all right-thinking people turn their thoughts to roof-down motoring.

If your budget stretches beyond a Mazda MX-5 or a Mini, then you could mosey your way in the direction of a McLaren 570S Spider, prices of which start at £164,750.

It gets an electrically operated retractable hardtop which, McLaren says, adds just 46kg in weight compared to the 570S Coupé.

And thanks to the strength of the carbon fibre tub around which McLaren builds its cars, the open-air 570S's structural rigidity is unchanged.

“The McLaren 570S Spider is the most attainable McLaren Spider to date and adds yet another dimension to the McLaren Sports Series family," said McLaren Automotive chief executive Mike Flewitt.

"This is a convertible without compromise; its mid-engined layout and carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis guarantee the same thrilling dynamic performance and exceptional driver involvement enjoyed in a 570S Coupé, but with the added attraction of a retractable hard-top that delivers the extra exhilaration of roof-down motoring."
