PARENTS in the Belfast council area can take advantage of a free trial of cloth nappies.

Belfast City Council ran the scheme last year and has extended it for another 12 months due to demand.

Research suggests households which use washable instead of disposable nappies save around £550 annually.

Parents who sign up to the scheme receive a free, two-week real nappy trial pack. If they decide to continue using washable nappies and spend £50 or more on them they will get a £30 refund.

The scheme is limited to one application per household, not one application per child. To date 40 per cent of parents who take part in the trial convert to long term cloth nappy use.

The council said the project was being extended as it "helps to embed sustainable living in daily life, and it helps to sustain jobs in the laundry industry such as in our partners The Library Group, a not-for-profit organisation which offers a nappy laundering service".
