A PUPIL at Assumption Grammar School in Ballynahinch has become the first to be honoured for her commitment to the Catholic faith by a leading lay organisation in the area.

Council 29 of The Order of the Knights of St Columbanus selected year 14 student Ciara Hunt for its 'Honouring the Faith' award.

Ciara, said the Knights, "was indeed most worthy and demonstrated the commitment, selflessness and enthusiasm frequently shown by many young adults in our demanding society but all too often overlooked in a self-serving, consumer obsessed western culture".

She was presented with the award at the school's leavers' Mass this month.

The award is aimed at candidates, male or female, who have worked diligently over their school career in promoting the mission statement and Catholic ethos of their school.

Assumption Grammar is the first of six schools in the area to take part in the award. The former Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Charles Brown, visited the school in 2015 and praised it for the way it joyfully celebrated the Catholic faith.

Máire Daly, head of RE at the school, said that during her seven years at Assumption, Ciara had "demonstrated a singular commitment to her faith which she has lived out in a range of ways".

"Her spirit of generosity and willingness to serve others was always transparent and carried out with sincere humility," she said.
