This week marks Men’s Health Week, a good opportunity to offer men a gentle reminder that they need to pay more attention to their health and wellbeing.

Dr Lisa Neligan, GP at Kingsbridge Private Hospital, Belfast, encourages men not to be embarrassed about seeing a doctor and highlights areas they shouldn't ignore:

MIND MATTERS There's more awareness than ever around mental health. Symptoms such as low mood, stress-related anxiety and loss of confidence can all be signs of depression. Trust your doctor and talk to them if you are feeling low – it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

HEART HEALTH With an increase in young sports players suffering from heart issues on the pitch, it is important for men of all ages to have regular heart screenings.

RECTAL BLEEDING – This is often a symptom that goes unnoticed because many put it down to diet or constipation or simply just hope it goes away. However, blood in stools can be much more serious. If you notice any change in your bowel habits, arrange to see your GP to rule out anything sinister.

PROSTATE PROBLEMS – Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer among men. Symptoms such as excessive need to urinate in the middle of the night and sexual dysfunction shouldn’t be ignored. Speak with your GP for peace of mind or look at some of the new treatments that are available, such as Urolift.

TESTICULAR TESTS – It's so important to check yourself regularly for lumps or changes and to consult a doctor quickly if you do find anything unusual.

WORRYING WEIGHT – The beer belly might be going, which is great if you are trying to lose weight, but if you start to notice rapid weight loss and a gaunter face you should consult your GP. Sudden weight loss can be a sign of cancer, viral infection, bowel disease and more.
