Your guide to becoming a marketing ambassador

THE Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) is calling on marketers across Ireland, who are developing their skills at all levels, to join its Ireland board and become ambassadors for the world’s leading professional marketing body, champion of customer engagement and best practice.

CIM is especially interested in hearing from marketers working at all levels in large commercial organisations and young marketers starting out in their careers, possibly still studying, as well as people employed in sectors such as food and drink.

CIM Ireland ambassadors are volunteer roles, focused on promoting the marketing profession through organising networking events, supporting research and promotion. Ambassadors who are also Ireland board members are required to attend a quota of board meetings, and it is estimated these roles require an input of about 7- 15 hours per month.

In return CIM offers its volunteers the chance to help shape locally the work of an organisation which is over 100 years old, has over 100 accredited study centres in 110 countries across the world and is recognised by the marketing profession as the “go to place” for support.

Becoming an ambassador offers marketers the chance to develop leadership and team work skills at a board level, with an induction and ongoing support from CIM network manager Carol Magill, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Locally, CIM is growing. Over the past year it has opened a new study centre in Derry, the North West School of Marketing, and continues to see growth in Belfast via Belfast Met and Belfast Academy of Marketing (who also operate in Coleraine).

CIM also works with students studying marketing at both universities in Northern Ireland (Queen’s and Ulster at its Jordanstown and Magee campuses) through the CIM Graduate Gateway Programme.

CIM supports a monthly events programme, developed with the support from leading thinkers from organisations such as the Cabinet Office, Mintel, Baker McKenzie as well as gaining insight from the legal profession via Cleaver Fulton Rankin.

Over the past year CIM has developed a new ‘community’ structure for the UK and Ireland. After a successful pilot in other regions, this new approach is being introduced to the Ireland board. This change aims to help underpin a strong, more agile, relevant and engaging organisation.

We are seeking people who will champion the marketing community at a time of great change. These are “hands on” roles which offer strong personal development opportunities. Ambassadors must be a member of CIM (at any level) but there are also opportunities for non-members to join project teams.
