Discovery Derry's 'secret garden' of Irish culture

MAGHERA, Co Derry is just 50 minutes drive from Belfast. In that space of time you find yourself arriving at a destination which you may have thought could only be found in counties such as Donegal, Galway or Mayo. I discovered a 'secret garden' of Irish culture, language and music and all at just a short drive from Belfast.

Not only did I discover a growing Irish speaking community within an area with a strong Gaelic heritage but also opportunities and events that are available for everyone and anyone who has an interest in the Irish culture. Here we can experience Irish culture at its best without the usually necessary trip 'Down South'.

Founded in 1992 Carntogher Community Association was formed to promote the regeneration of the Sleacht Néill/Carn Tóchair area and a range of economic, cultural and environmental projects. What is more amazing is the exciting programme of arts, musical and educational events that are available there. They have a top of the range entertainment facility giving us access to some of the best and greatest musicians that the Irish music scene has to offer.

On Saturday, November 15, An Carn will host the most exciting band in Ireland since the Coronas, We Banjo 3, who play Irish music with influences from the Bluegrass and Old Time American traditions. They will also have musical trad sessions, including sean Nós Dancing available throughout the year. As well as amazing concerts that are available An Carn provides a multitude of workshops and events assured to suit all ages of the community.

This is definitely one of Derry's best kept secrets and is producing opportunities to become involved in the Irish culture scene and experience Irish Culture at its best.
