Consign petty politics to the past

FOLLOWING the Northern Ireland team's success at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Stormont minister for culture, arts and leisure held a reception at Parliament Buildings - such a reception was both appropriate and right.

Sadly, however, the minister allowed petty politics and Sinn Féin dogma to enter into the wording on the invitation by inviting athletes and officials who had "represented the north of Ireland" to attend the event. Under questioning in the house the minister claimed: "I did not see the invitation that was sent out."

Strange, as the minister had signed the letter.

As we look forward and continue to work on establishing an increasingly normal, peaceful and tolerant society, such petty politics need to be consigned to the past.
