It is always entertaining, informative and thought provoking His suggestion (August 2) - regarding the Commonwealth Games - that Ireland should join the Commonwealth while perhaps tongue in cheek has a lot of positives The Commonwealth has 53 member nations which should not be confused with the 71 countries and regions which are represented at the games. The Commonwealth Games Federation permits membership of any territory with a recognised independent sports federation so the Republic would be able to maintain the integrity of its neutrality and the young people of Ireland would be able to compete and display their athletic prowess on a major international stage The next games, in four years time, are in Australia and it would be a wonderful thing not only for the athletes but for all the people of Ireland if application could be made for participation at this great sporting event.
