Desperate democracy

DESPITE a large number of our politicians being fairly inept and inarticulate and the apparent unaccountability they enjoy, i remain a firm supporter of democracy and always exercise my right to vote. While this may or may not make a difference in the grand scheme of things, i'm happy in the knowledge that i have at least tried. It is therefore galling to hear talk of a unionist pact for the Westminster election next year. It makes a mockery of the democratic process but also it devalues the individual parties and the opinion of voters. If they are so readily willing to put aside party and policy differences to field an agreed candidate, in what is arguably their most important election, why not put these differences aside permanently, end the charade and become a single unionist party?
