Allocation of housing not an orange and green issue

In oUR public housing shortage it is vital that house allocation rules are in the news - to remind us of nelson McCausland's plan to destroy the Housing Executive, the guardian of the points system. newton Emerson's article (August 24) was on parties' policies on allocation rules but contains his usual lie about the sDLP, which must be corrected. sDLP policy is that allocation must be on individual need only - a policy it defended since achieving the formation of the Housing Executive in 1971. He scandalously said sDLP's policy was "community need" - "Catholic housing" - for which he presented no evidence. others like the DUP with its manipulated segregated housing plan for Girdwood and sinn Fein prioritising housing transfers over the points system, support injustice.

Housing is not an orange and green issue.

Fair people admit more nationalists qualify for houses - as do some who won't state community background - but as Austin Currie warns, houses must only be given on need.

It is evident DUP doesn't honour agreements but - as Michelle Gildernew to her credit says - sinn Fein must make them and support allocation on need and the retention of an improved Housing Executive.
