Deserved tributes to Eamon Friel

There will be widespread sorrow over the death yesterday after a short illness of the Derry-based singer/songwriter Eamon Friel at the age of 70.

His brilliant satirical contributions to the BBC’s Talkback programme won him a dedicated following and he also presented Friel’s Fancy on Radio Foyle and other shows during a broadcast career stretching over three decades.

Mr Friel’s understated humour allowed him to make telling political points in the course of his work, while he was also a gifted musician who released a string of influential albums, so the many tributes paid to him yesterday were well deserved.
