Pathetic acts at Narrow Water

The latest attack on the memorial to 18 British soldiers who were murdered in an IRA double bomb explosion at Narrow Water, outside Warrenpoint in Co Down, almost 40 years ago is just as disgusting as all the previous incidents at the same scene.

It is appalling that twisted individuals from any section of society are still prepared to insult the memory of victims of violence from our troubled past.

If the location of the tribute to the dead soldiers beside a busy road means that it is constantly vulnerable to pathetic acts of vandalism, then perhaps the authorities may have to consider a different setting.

However, by far the best outcome would be the encouragement of a tolerant and respectful approach on all sides towards the process of commemorating the dead.
