Acclaim for superstar Katie Taylor

Co Wicklow boxer Katie Taylor deserves enormous credit for her achievement in becoming the undisputed lightweight champion of the world after defeating Belgium’s Delfine Persoon at Madison Square Garden in New York early yesterday.

She had a stellar amateur career, with six consecutive triumphs at the women’s world championships before eventually securing Olympic gold at the 2012 London games.

Taylor has proved equally dominant in the professional ranks, and, with nothing left to prove, may be considering retirement at the age of 32.

Whatever decision she takes, she will justifiably be regarded as among the greatest Irish sportswomen of all time.
