The shocking acid attack which resulted in the death of a dog in Newry was described by vet Liam Fitzsimons as the worst case of animal cruelty he had ever encountered.

Mr Fitzsimons, who had no option other than to put down the dog after it was brought to his clinic in agony on Tuesday night, was fully entitled to describe the perpetrator as a `monster’.

Police have launched a full investigation and it is essential that they are provided with the information from the public which will enable them to make an arrest.

Anyone who could behave in such a callous way plainly presents a threat to humans as well as animals and must be brought before the courts without delay.
