Concern over republican chants at Conlan fight
Boxing has a long history as a cross-community sport in Ireland and has produced major stars with a huge following from all sections of our divided society.
Michael Conlan, the former Olympic bronze medalist from Belfast, is widely regarded as a future world champion and his latest appearance at the legendary Madison Square Garden venue in New York resulted in his eleventh consecutive win.
There will be considerable regret that sections of the crowd were heard chanting support for the IRA as he made his way to the ring for the high profile contest.
References to paramilitary organisations should have no place at such occasions, and it will be hoped that, regardless of the setting, a very different atmosphere surrounds his next fight.
